Art Term Tuesday-Balance

Posted by in Art History, In the Studio | 0 comments

Today’s art term is BALANCE.
Balance is one of the principles of art. There are three types of balance: symmetrical, asymmetrical and radial.
Symmetrical balance is based on a centerline where each element is repeated on each side. The human body has symmetrical balance.
Asymmetrical balance is based on having various elements repeated throughout the artwork to create a type of evenness. Both sides of the artwork do not need to be exactly the same.
Radial balance is based on a central point with the elements going out from that central point. A windmill has radial balance.

Here is an example of a radial design by M.C. Escher.
