Art Term Tuesday-PATTERN

Posted by in Art History, In the Studio | 0 comments

Today’s art term is PATTERN. Pattern is one of the Principles of Art.

Pattern is when the art elements are used in a planned or random manner in an artwork. An example of a repeat pattern is circle, square, circle, square.  A random pattern has no noticeable repeat. Patterns are also found in nature.

Gustav Klimt utilizes pattern in his painting entitled “The Kiss.” Klimt adds a random rectangular pattern on the mans clothing and a random circular pattern on the woman’s clothing.  The two patterns help distinguish between the male figure and the female figure.

Look around your world and see how many patterns you can find!
