Robert Motherwell was born on January 24, 1915 in Aberdeen, Washington.

Robert Motherwell went to art school at Stanford University (philosophy), Harvard University (philosophy) and Columbia University (art).
Robert Motherwell was part of the following art movement: Abstract Expressionism
Robert Motherwell’s most famous painting is Elegy to the Spanish Republic No. 110 painted in 1971.
Three interesting facts about Robert Motherwell:
1. Motherwell was a prolific writer and was a member of the editorial board of the surrealist magazine “VVV.”
2. The youngest member of the circle of first generation Abstract Expressionist painters.
3. Motherwell was married and divorced from artist Helen Frankenthaler.
Robert Motherwell died on July 16, 1991.
