Tuesday begins our new weekly feature, Art Term Tuesday! In the next few weeks I want to introduce you to the basic vocabulary of art.  As with any subject or sport, art has its own vocabulary. What you may not realize is that you already know many of these words.

Think back to the first time you became exposed to a new sport.  I remember the first few times I watched a hockey game on TV. It was back in the day of the Philadelphia Flyers “Legion of Doom” line of Eric Lindros, John LeClair and Mikael Renberg. These three young players made hockey exciting for everyone. Once I began watching the games and really listening to the announcers, I began to understand the sport. The blue line, face-off, forecheck, power play, or a three-on-one are all terms I began to learn. The more I understood, the more I became a fan of the game.

My goal is for you to begin to become a fan of art. I want you to be comfortable with art and be able to say more than “That’s cool” or “I don’t like it.” Once you understand art, you can begin to teach your child about art too. By learning the basic vocabulary of art, I hope you will see the world in a whole new way.
Art is not relegated to the confines of a museum; instead art is all around us!
