A variation of the Vincent van Gogh tree project is to use chalk pastel rather than oil pastel. Kids often draw with a tight grip on their pencil and their hand firmly placed on the paper. With chalk pastels, you can emphasize a looser style of drawing and the kids need to raise their hand off the paper. Ask them why that would be necessary and you will always have a few hands shoot up to say that if you keep your hands down you’ll smear the chalk!
